The Birthday Party

Harold Pinter · Encore Publishing · 1958

The Birthday Party was first performed at the Arts Theatre, Cambridge, in April 1958 and transferred to the Lyric Hammersmith in London, where it was savaged by critics and closed after eight performances. Harold Hobson’s belated rave in the Sunday Times rescued Pinter’s reputation, and the play has since been recognized as one of the key works of twentieth-century drama — the play that introduced “Pinteresque” menace to the English stage.

The setup is deceptively simple: Stanley Webber, a man of indeterminate age and occupation, is the sole lodger in Meg and Petey Boles’s seedy seaside boarding house. Two strangers — Goldberg and McCann — arrive, claim to be looking for a room, and proceed to destroy Stanley through a nightmarish interrogation (the famous “cross-examination” scene, a barrage of unanswerable questions), a terrifying birthday party (though Stanley insists it is not his birthday), and finally a physical and psychological breakdown that leaves him mute, suited up, and led away.

The play’s power derives from what is not explained: who are Goldberg and McCann? What organization do they represent? What has Stanley done? Why has he been hiding? Pinter refuses all answers, and the refusal is not a failure of exposition but the play’s fundamental method. The threat is effective precisely because it is unspecified — it draws its power from each audience member’s own fears of exposure, judgment, and persecution.
