The Beautiful Room Is Empty

Edmund White · Alfred A. Knopf · 1988

The Beautiful Room Is Empty was published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1988. The novel continues the autobiographical narrative begun in A Boy’s Own Story, following the unnamed narrator through college at the University of Michigan, his move to New York, his continued attempts at psychoanalytic “cure,” his immersion in the bohemian and artistic worlds of 1960s Manhattan, and finally his presence at the Stonewall riots of June 1969.

The title comes from Kafka — a parable about a man who waits his entire life outside a door that was always meant for him alone — and captures the novel’s central theme: the protagonist’s sense that his real life is happening elsewhere, that the room of authentic selfhood remains empty while he performs an inauthentic version of himself for the world. The Stonewall riots, which close the novel, represent the moment when that door finally opens.

White’s prose in this volume is richer and more confident than in the first novel. The narrator has access to the intellectual and cultural life of New York — art, opera, literature, philosophy — and White deploys this material not as decoration but as the substance of a life lived through aesthetic experience. The narrator’s lovers, friends, and mentors are drawn with novelistic precision, and the sexual encounters — frank, detailed, various — are presented as forms of knowledge rather than mere sensation.

The novel is also a portrait of psychoanalysis as an instrument of oppression: the narrator’s analyst works to eliminate his homosexuality, and the sessions become a theater of self-betrayal in which the patient collaborates in his own erasure.
