Ten Thousand Light-Years from Home was published by Ace Books in 1973, and it announced James Tiptree Jr. as a major new voice in science fiction — a voice that combined the genre’s traditional strengths (rigorous extrapolation, cosmic scale, narrative momentum) with qualities that were far rarer: psychological complexity, emotional rawness, and a preoccupation with gender and sexuality that seemed to come from a place of deep personal knowledge.
The collection includes several stories that would become classics: “And I Awoke and Found Me Here on the Cold Hill’s Side” (about human sexuality redirected toward aliens), “The Last Flight of Doctor Ain” (a scientist destroys humanity to save the Earth), and “Painwise” (an explorer modified to feel no pain discovers what that costs psychologically). Each demonstrates Tiptree’s characteristic method: take a speculative premise, push it to its logical extreme, and reveal the emotional consequences with devastating clarity.
The stories were published when Tiptree’s true identity — Alice Bradley Sheldon, a 58-year-old former CIA officer and experimental psychologist — was still unknown. The literary world assumed “Tiptree” was male, and Robert Silverberg famously wrote (in an introduction to Warm Worlds and Otherwise) that the stories showed “an ineluctably masculine” quality. The revelation of Sheldon’s gender in 1977 became one of science fiction’s most famous identity exposures.
