T Is for Trespass

Sue Grafton · G. P. Putnam's Sons · 2007

T Is for Trespass was published by G. P. Putnam’s Sons in 2007. Kinsey’s elderly neighbor Gus Vronsky falls and requires home care. The agency sends Solana Rojas — except that Solana Rojas is an identity stolen from a real nurse. The woman caring for Gus is actually a predator who specializes in isolating elderly victims, gaining control of their finances, and draining their assets.

The novel is the series’ most frightening because its villain is entirely realistic: elder abuse by caregivers with stolen credentials is a documented and growing problem. Grafton alternates between Kinsey’s perspective and Solana’s, giving the reader access to the predator’s calculating mind while Kinsey — unaware of the threat next door — goes about other business. The dramatic irony generates extraordinary tension.

Solana

Solana is the series’ most chilling antagonist — not because she is violent (though she can be) but because she is patient, methodical, and invisible. She exploits systems designed to protect the elderly: background check failures, overworked social services, the isolation of aging people from their families. Her predation is an indictment of the institutional failures that enable elder abuse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this based on real cases? Grafton researched elder abuse extensively, and the novel’s depictions of caregiver fraud, identity theft, and institutional failure are drawn from documented patterns.

Is this the scariest Millhone novel? Many readers think so — the realism of the threat is more disturbing than any serial killer.
