Stormbreaker

Anthony Horowitz · Walker Books · 2000

Stormbreaker was published by Walker Books in 2000 (and by Philomel in the US as Alex Rider: Stormbreaker). Alex Rider, a fourteen-year-old Londoner, discovers that his uncle Ian — supposedly a bank executive — was actually a spy for MI6 who was murdered during an investigation. MI6 recruits Alex (who has been unknowingly trained in martial arts, languages, and survival skills by his uncle) to complete the mission: infiltrating the compound of Herod Sayle, a Lebanese-born billionaire who plans to gift every school in Britain a free Stormbreaker computer — computers loaded with a deadly smallpox virus that will kill thousands of children.

The novel established the Alex Rider formula: a teenage James Bond operating in an adult world of espionage, with gadgets designed by MI6’s Smithers, villains with grandiose plans, and action sequences that blend plausibility with adolescent wish-fulfillment. Horowitz, already a successful children’s author, brought genuine craft to the series — the plots are tightly constructed, the villains have coherent motivations, and Alex’s youth creates both advantages (adults underestimate him) and vulnerabilities (he is physically outmatched and emotionally immature).

The series has sold over 20 million copies worldwide and was adapted into a 2006 film and a 2020 Amazon Prime television series.
