Sheltering Rain

Jojo Moyes · Hodder & Stoughton · 2002

Sheltering Rain was published by Hodder & Stoughton in 2002, Moyes’s debut novel. Written while she was working as a journalist at The Independent, the novel established themes she would return to throughout her career: the weight of family expectation, the cost of silence, and the possibility of connection across generational divides.

The three women are Joy (the grandmother), who married into an Anglo-Irish horse-racing family and maintained appearances through decades of unhappiness; Kate (her daughter), who escaped to Hong Kong and built an independent life but carries unresolved anger toward her mother; and Sabine (Kate’s teenage daughter), who is sent to stay with her grandmother in Ireland and becomes the inadvertent catalyst for truths that have been buried for forty years.

The Irish setting — a big house slowly declining, horses that represent both livelihood and identity, a community that knows everything but says nothing — provides a framework for Moyes’s exploration of how families maintain dysfunction through silence. Joy’s marriage, Kate’s flight, and the secret that connects them are all sustained by the agreement not to speak, and Sabine’s outsider perspective (she is young enough to ask the questions adults have learned not to) threatens the careful architecture of avoidance.

The novel is quieter and more literary than Moyes’s later bestsellers, with less of the high-concept plotting that would characterize Me Before You and its successors.
