One Step Behind

Henning Mankell · Ordfront · 1997

One Step Behind (Swedish: Steget efter) was published by Ordfront in 1997 and is one of the darkest entries in the Wallander series. The novel opens with the discovery of three young people murdered in a nature reserve — shot while celebrating Midsummer in period costume — and a parallel discovery that a fellow police officer, Karl Evert Svedberg, has been found murdered in his apartment. The two cases converge as Wallander realizes that Svedberg had been secretly investigating the Midsummer murders before his own death.

The title captures Wallander’s defining frustration throughout the novel: he is always one step behind the killer, arriving after the fact, reading signs that are already cold. The killer operates with a precision and patience that suggests planning months in advance, and Wallander’s investigation is a race against time — a race he keeps losing. The bodies accumulate, and each failure increases the pressure on Wallander and his team.

Mankell uses the novel to examine the internal dynamics of the police force — Svedberg’s secret life (unknown to his colleagues), the guilt his colleagues feel at having missed signs of his distress, and the institutional failures that allow a killer to operate within the system’s blind spots. The novel is also notable for its deepening portrait of Wallander’s isolation: his diabetes is worsening, his personal life is empty, and his sense of being overwhelmed by the violence he investigates is becoming chronic.
