Negative Blue: Selected Later Poems was published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 2000 and serves as the companion volume to Country Music: Selected Early Poems — together, the two books span Wright’s entire career from the late 1960s through the end of the century. Negative Blue draws from the three collections of his second trilogy (Chickamauga, Appalachia, Black Zodiac) plus a section of new poems, and presents the definitive selection of his mature work.
The title is characteristic Wright: “negative blue” suggests both the photographic negative (an image reversed, dark where light should be) and the negative theology of mysticism (defining God by what He is not). Wright’s poetry operates in both registers simultaneously — it is a poetry of precise visual observation (the particular blue of the Virginia sky) and of metaphysical absence (the God who is not there, the meaning that the world suggests but withholds).
