Middle Passage

Charles Johnson · Atheneum · 1990

Middle Passage was published by Atheneum in 1990 and won the National Book Award for Fiction. Rutherford Calhoun is a newly freed slave in New Orleans in 1830 — educated, articulate, and constitutionally unable to stay out of trouble. To escape both his creditors and a schoolteacher who wants to marry and reform him, he stows away on the Republic, a clipper ship that he discovers, too late, is bound for Africa to pick up a cargo of enslaved Allmuseri tribespeople.

The novel is part sea adventure (storms, mutiny, and the physical horrors of a slave ship), part philosophical dialogue (Calhoun’s encounters with Captain Falcon, a Nietzschean monster who sees the slave trade as an expression of pure will), and part mystical journey (the Allmuseri carry with them a sacred artifact — a crate containing their god — whose nature is never entirely clarified but whose influence on the ship’s crew is devastating).

Johnson, a trained philosopher and a student of Buddhism, uses the adventure framework to explore questions about identity, freedom, and the nature of the self. Calhoun begins the novel as a man without commitments — free in the most literal sense but empty, a void with a vocabulary. The voyage fills him: with horror, with knowledge, with responsibility, and ultimately with the capacity for love. The prose style is a virtuoso performance — Johnson writes in a nineteenth-century idiom that is simultaneously authentic and subtly ironic, and the narrative voice (Calhoun’s journal) is one of the most distinctive in contemporary American fiction.
