Looking for Rachel Wallace

Robert B. Parker · Delacorte Press · 1980

Looking for Rachel Wallace was published by Delacorte Press in 1980, the sixth Spenser novel and the one that most directly engages with questions of gender and sexuality. Rachel Wallace is a lesbian feminist author whose forthcoming book attacks the religious right and corporate America — and who has received death threats serious enough to require a bodyguard.

Spenser is hired for the job and immediately clashes with Rachel: she is contemptuous of his masculinity (she sees all men as potential oppressors), his violence (she is committed to nonviolent resistance), and his heterosexual assumptions (he calls women “honey” without thinking). He is respectful of her intelligence and courage but refuses to modify his personality to meet her political requirements.

She fires him. Then she’s kidnapped.

The novel’s power lies in the second half: Spenser, no longer employed but bound by his personal code (you don’t abandon someone in danger just because they fired you), searches for Rachel alone — driven by the same protective impulse she condemned as patriarchal. The tension between his genuine respect for her autonomy (he would not force his protection on her) and his inability to stand aside while she’s in danger creates a moral complexity unusual in the genre.

Parker’s treatment of Rachel is genuinely respectful: she is not straw-feminist but a serious person with serious arguments, and Spenser’s disagreement with her is not the novel’s final word. Their relationship evolves across subsequent books into genuine friendship.
