Life Ahead was published by Harper & Row in 1963, drawn from Krishnamurti’s talks to students at Indian schools. Like Think on These Things (published the following year from similar sources), it addresses young people directly — but where that book is organized around student questions, Life Ahead takes a more sustained, essay-like approach to the problems of growing up in a world that demands conformity.
Krishnamurti’s starting point is the observation that education as it exists is a process of conditioning: it teaches students what to think, not how to think; it rewards conformity and punishes originality; it creates fear (of failure, of authority, of the future) rather than the confidence that comes from self-knowledge. The student emerges conditioned to fit into society’s patterns — and it is precisely this conditioning that perpetuates society’s problems.
His alternative begins with the question: what is it to learn? Not to accumulate information (though that has its place) but to perceive freshly, to observe without the screen of prejudice, to face the fact of what one is without the ideal of what one should be. This quality of learning — attentive, choiceless, without motive — is what Krishnamurti calls intelligence, and it cannot be produced by any system, method, or discipline.
The book’s treatment of fear is particularly powerful in the educational context: Krishnamurti shows how the entire structure of schooling (examinations, competition, punishment, reward) generates and reinforces fear, and how fear prevents precisely the quality of attention that genuine learning requires.
