L.A. Confidential

James Ellroy · Mysterious Press · 1990

L.A. Confidential was published by Mysterious Press in 1990, and it is the book that elevated Ellroy from the ranks of talented crime writers to those of major American novelists. The novel follows three LAPD officers — Bud White, a violent cop who protects women; Ed Exley, an ambitious political operator; and Jack Vincennes, a corrupt celebrity cop — through a labyrinthine plot involving the 1951 Bloody Christmas beatings, a multiple homicide at a coffee shop, and a pornography ring that extends into the highest reaches of Los Angeles society.

The novel’s achievement is structural as much as stylistic. Ellroy manages a plot of extraordinary complexity — dozens of characters, multiple timelines, interlocking conspiracies — with absolute clarity. The reader is never confused, despite the density of incident, because Ellroy’s prose style (short sentences, precise period slang, no wasted words) ensures that every narrative beat lands with maximum force.

The three protagonists represent different corruptions of the ideal of law enforcement. Bud White’s violence is motivated by chivalry — he beats and kills men who harm women — but his chivalry is itself a form of pathology, an inability to see women as anything other than victims requiring his protection. Ed Exley’s intelligence and ambition make him an effective political animal, but his refusal to compromise leaves him isolated and unable to connect with anyone on human terms. Jack Vincennes’s charm and celebrity make him the public face of the LAPD, but beneath the Hollywood gloss he is a corrupt and empty man living on payoffs and publicity.

Curtis Hanson’s 1997 film adaptation, starring Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, and Kevin Spacey, was a critical and commercial success. But the film necessarily simplified Ellroy’s plot, which is far denser, darker, and more morally unforgiving than any Hollywood production could accommodate.
