If Death Ever Slept

Rex Stout · Viking Press · 1957

If Death Ever Slept was published by Viking Press in 1957. Otis Jarrell, an industrialist, suspects that one of his household is stealing confidential business documents and selling them to a competitor. He hires Wolfe to investigate, but Wolfe’s fee is so enormous that Jarrell demands something unusual in return: Archie will go undercover as Jarrell’s personal secretary, living in the Jarrell household and investigating from within.

This setup gives Stout the opportunity to showcase Archie’s abilities without Wolfe’s direct supervision: Archie must navigate the complex dynamics of a wealthy family (Jarrell’s much-younger wife, his resentful adult children, his staff) while maintaining his cover and reporting back to Wolfe by phone. When a murder occurs within the household, Archie’s position becomes both more dangerous and more valuable.

The novel exploits the dramatic irony of Archie’s dual role: the reader knows he’s a detective, the household doesn’t, and the tension between what Archie observes and what he can reveal drives the narrative. The Jarrell family is one of Stout’s most vivid domestic ensembles — each member with separate secrets, separate motives, and a separate relationship to the household’s patriarch.
