Fire from Heaven

Mary Renault · Longmans · 1969

Fire from Heaven was published by Longmans in 1969, the first volume of Renault’s Alexander trilogy and perhaps her supreme achievement. The novel covers Alexander’s life from age four to twenty — from his first awareness of the murderous rivalry between his parents through his education by Aristotle, his first military command, and his accession to the throne of Macedon after Philip’s assassination.

Renault’s Alexander is not the military machine of most historical accounts but a prodigy formed by extraordinary pressures: his mother Olympias (brilliant, mystical, sexually charismatic, and poisonously possessive); his father Philip (a military genius, a political visionary, a drunkard, and an insatiable lover of both sexes); and the tension between them that makes young Alexander simultaneously their battleground and their weapon.

The relationship with Hephaistion — presented as the central love of Alexander’s life — is rendered with Renault’s characteristic naturalism: not as scandal or revelation but as the most important fact about the boy’s emotional development. Their love is the one stable element in Alexander’s chaotic childhood, and Renault makes it the foundation on which his later achievements rest.

The novel’s treatment of Aristotle as Alexander’s tutor is subtle: the philosopher teaches the boy to think, but Alexander’s nature exceeds what philosophy can contain. He learns from Aristotle but is not formed by him — his ambition, his vision, his recklessness come from somewhere philosophy cannot reach.
