Finch

Jeff VanderMeer · Underland Press · 2009

Finch was published by Underland Press in 2009, completing the Ambergris cycle with its darkest and most generically surprising entry — a noir detective novel set in a city that has fallen to the gray caps. The fungal creatures have risen from below, conquered Ambergris, and imposed their own incomprehensible order on its human population. John Finch (not his real name — everyone in the occupied city has taken new identities) is a detective forced to work for the gray caps’ puppet government, investigating a double murder: a human and a gray cap, found dead together in an apartment.

VanderMeer executes an extraordinary generic fusion: the prose rhythms and structural conventions of noir (the hardboiled detective, the dangerous dame, the conspiracy that reaches to the top) are mapped onto a secondary-world fantasy of occupied Ambergris. The result is disorienting in precisely the way VanderMeer intends: familiar genre expectations (the detective will solve the case, reveal the conspiracy, restore order) collide with the alien reality of a world where the occupiers are literally inhuman and where “order” means something no human can comprehend.

The body horror intensifies throughout: Finch must eat memory bulbs (fungal growths that allow him to experience dead people’s memories), the gray caps communicate through biological modifications, and the boundary between human and fungal becomes increasingly permeable. The novel’s climax reveals what the gray caps have been building — a structure that will transform reality itself — and Finch must choose between resistance and acceptance.
