Blowback was published by Atria Books in 2005. The novel draws on the historical legend of Hannibal Barca’s secret weapon — a military technology so devastating that the Roman Senate ordered all records of it destroyed — and transposes it to the present. A classified U.S. government program had attempted to recreate the weapon; now the research has been stolen, and terrorists plan to deploy it.
Thor’s integration of ancient history with contemporary thriller plotting is characteristic of the series: the novels frequently draw on historical mysteries and conspiracy theories to generate their premises, then execute them with operational military precision. The Hannibal premise gives this entry a broader scope than the purely political-thriller earlier novels.
The Historical Thriller
Blowback established the template Thor would use repeatedly — anchoring a modern threat in a genuine historical mystery. The research into Hannibal’s campaigns is real; the weapon is speculation built on gaps in the historical record. This approach gives the novels an intellectual dimension that distinguishes them from purely tactical thrillers. Readers learn something while being entertained.
