Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

Lewis Carroll · Macmillan and Co. · 1865

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was published by Macmillan and Co. in 1865, with illustrations by John Tenniel. It began as a story told on July 4, 1862, during a boat trip on the Thames, when Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (a mathematics lecturer at Christ Church, Oxford) entertained the three Liddell sisters — including ten-year-old Alice — with an improvised tale of a girl who fell down a rabbit hole.

The published novel transformed that improvisation into something unprecedented in children’s literature: a book that operates simultaneously as entertainment (the absurd adventures of a sensible child in an insensible world), as philosophical inquiry (what happens to logic, language, and identity when their rules are changed?), and as social satire (the Queen of Hearts’ court as a parody of Victorian authority). Carroll, a mathematician and logician, understood that the absurd is not the absence of logic but logic applied too rigorously or with different axioms — and Wonderland is a world where linguistic and logical rules are followed with absolute consistency to absolutely insane conclusions.

The Tenniel illustrations are inseparable from the text’s identity and vastly affect collectible value. The first edition has a complex bibliographic history: the original 1865 printing was suppressed by Tenniel (who was dissatisfied with the print quality), and copies from this withdrawn first printing are among the rarest and most valuable books in the English language.
