2010: Odyssey Two

Arthur C. Clarke · Granada · 1982

2010: Odyssey Two was published by Granada in 1982. Nine years after the events of 2001, a joint American-Soviet expedition aboard the Soviet ship Leonov returns to Jupiter (Clarke shifted the destination from Saturn to Jupiter to align with Kubrick’s film) to recover the derelict Discovery and, if possible, reactivate HAL 9000 to learn what happened to Dave Bowman.

What they find is that Bowman — or the entity that was Bowman — has been transformed into something beyond human, and that the monolith-builders are preparing Jupiter for a transformation of their own. The novel climaxes with Jupiter being converted into a second sun (“Lucifer”), igniting in order to warm the ice-covered moon Europa and foster the development of life in its subsurface ocean. Bowman’s message to Earth — “ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS — EXCEPT EUROPA. ATTEMPT NO LANDING THERE” — became one of the most quoted lines in science fiction.
