A short life of the author
Veronica Roth (born 1988) wrote the Divergent trilogy into a cultural phenomenon. Published between 2011 and 2013, the series sold over thirty-five million copies worldwide, was translated into dozens of languages, and spawned a film franchise starring Shailene Woodley. Roth wrote the first book while still a student at Northwestern University, and its success made her one of the defining figures of the early-2010s YA dystopian wave alongside Suzanne Collins and James Dashner.
Life and Career
Veronica Anne Roth was born in New York City in 1988 and grew up in the suburbs of Chicago — a setting that would become central to Divergent. She began writing the novel during her senior year at Northwestern University, where she studied creative writing. The book was sold at auction to Katherine Tegen Books (an imprint of HarperCollins) and published in April 2011, just weeks before Roth’s graduation.
Divergent is set in a future Chicago where society is divided into five factions, each defined by a single virtue: Abnegation (selflessness), Amity (peace), Candor (honesty), Dauntless (bravery), and Erudite (intelligence). Sixteen-year-old Tris Prior discovers she is “Divergent” — fitting into no single faction — which makes her both powerful and dangerous. The novel’s combination of identity crisis, physical action, and dystopian world-building resonated powerfully with YA readers.
Insurgent (2012) and Allegiant (2013) completed the trilogy, though Allegiant’s narrative choices — particularly its ending — proved divisive among fans. A companion volume, Four: A Divergent Collection (2014), told the series’ backstory from the love interest’s perspective.
Beyond Divergent
The films — Divergent (2014), Insurgent (2015), and Allegiant (2016) — performed well initially but declined in returns, and the planned final film was cancelled. The franchise’s fade reflected a broader market shift away from YA dystopian fiction.
Roth pivoted to adult fiction with The Chosen Ones (2020), a novel that imagines what happens to a group of young heroes after they have defeated the great evil — essentially asking what post-traumatic stress looks like for chosen-one characters. Poster Girl (2022) explored surveillance and accountability in a post-authoritarian society. These adult novels demonstrated a more nuanced sensibility while retaining Roth’s world-building strengths.
She has also written The End and Other Beginnings (2019), a collection of short fiction, and Arch-Conspirator (2023), a science fiction novella retelling Sophocles’ Antigone.

Collecting Roth
Divergent first edition (Katherine Tegen Books/HarperCollins, 2011) is the key collectible — first printings in fine condition with dust jacket bring $100–$400, signed copies $200–$600. The first printing can be identified by the full number line including “1” on the copyright page. Advance Reading Copies (ARCs) are scarce and bring $75–$200. Insurgent and Allegiant first editions are common and modestly priced. Signed editions were produced for many of her titles. Roth has signed prolifically at events and tours. The collecting market for Divergent is driven primarily by YA collectors and completists rather than literary first-edition collectors. Condition is particularly important for YA titles, as many copies were read hard by young readers.
