A short life of the author
Ursula Vernon (born 1977) is one of the most versatile and prolific creators in contemporary speculative fiction — an author and illustrator who writes wildly inventive children’s books under her own name and dark, funny, deeply original fantasy and horror for adults as T. Kingfisher. Under both names, she has won Hugo Awards, Nebula Awards, and a host of other honors.
Life and Career
Vernon trained as an artist and began her career in illustration and webcomics, most notably Digger (2003–2011), a long-form webcomic about a wombat who finds herself in a world of gods and dead gods. Digger won the Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story and demonstrated Vernon’s distinctive voice: pragmatic protagonists, deadpan humor, genuine horror, and a deep understanding of mythology and ecology.
Her children’s books include the Dragonbreath series (illustrated hybrid novels about a dragon in middle school) and the Hamster Princess series (fractured fairy tales with a hamster heroine), both successful for their irreverent humor and genuinely inventive plots.
As T. Kingfisher, she has produced a remarkable run of adult fantasy and horror. The Twisted Ones (2019) was a folk-horror novel drawing on Arthur Machen. The Hollow Places (2020) was a portal-horror novel set in a taxidermy museum. Nettle and Bone (2022) won the Hugo and Nebula Awards — a fairy tale about a princess who must kill the prince, featuring bone dogs, dust wives, and a pragmatic approach to heroism that is Vernon’s signature.
The Paladin series (beginning with Paladin’s Grace, 2020) combines romance, fantasy, and thriller elements with Vernon’s trademark voice: characters who are competent, kind, deeply anxious, and extremely funny.

Collecting Vernon
Self-published and small-press T. Kingfisher editions are the primary collectibles, as many of her adult novels were initially self-published before being picked up by major houses. Early printings of The Twisted Ones and The Hollow Places (Argyll Productions/Red Wombat Studio) are scarce. Nettle and Bone (Tor, 2022) signed first edition is sought-after. The Digger collected editions (Sofawolf Press) are also collectible.
