A short life of the author
Tim Cahill (born 1944) is an American travel and adventure writer whose work combines genuine physical danger with a sense of humor so dry it could serve as kindling. As a founding editor of Outside magazine and a prolific contributor to numerous publications, Cahill helped define a genre — adventure travel writing — that balances the adrenaline of extreme experience with the craft of literary prose.
Life and Career
Cahill was a founding editor of Outside magazine in 1977 and wrote for the publication for decades, alongside contributions to Rolling Stone, National Geographic Adventure, and other outlets. His beat was the edges of the world and the edges of sanity — places where the physical challenges were matched by cultural strangeness and personal risk.
Jaguars Ripped My Flesh (1987) collected his early adventure writing and became a classic of the genre. The pieces covered swimming with whales, crossing the Sahara, diving in cenotes, and various other activities that most sensible people would decline. The writing was distinguished by Cahill’s self-deprecating humor — he presented himself not as a heroic explorer but as a moderately competent person in way over his head, which made the adventures more vivid and more funny.
A Wolverine Is Eating My Leg (1989), Pecked to Death by Ducks (1993), and Pass the Butterworms (1997) continued in this vein, each title promising (and delivering) the combination of physical danger and absurdist comedy that became Cahill’s trademark.
Hold the Enlightenment (2002) showed his range extending into more reflective territory, though the adventures — kayaking in Borneo, trekking in Irian Jaya — remained central.
