A short life of the author
Rebecca Yarros (b. 1981) was born on 10 April 1981. She is the daughter of a career Army officer and grew up moving between military bases. She studied English at Troy University. She has been open about living with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a connective-tissue disorder, and her experience as a military spouse informs much of her writing.
Life and Career
Yarros published over fifteen contemporary romance novels — including The Last Letter (2019) and Great and Precious Things (2020) — before the Empyrean series transformed her career.
Fourth Wing (2023) — about Violet Sorrengail, a physically fragile young woman forced into Basgiath War College, where cadets bond with dragons or die — became the publishing phenomenon of 2023. It combines a romantasy premise (dragon riders, war college, enemies-to-lovers romance) with fast pacing and a brutal, high-stakes setting. It sold over 2 million copies in its first six months and dominated BookTok for the entire year.
Iron Flame (2023) continued the series. Onyx Storm (2025) was the third installment. The Empyrean series has sold over 8 million copies worldwide.
Major Works and Themes
Yarros writes romantic fantasy with military settings, physically vulnerable but emotionally fierce heroines, and intensely satisfying romantic arcs. Her military background gives the war-college sequences an authenticity rare in fantasy.
