A short life of the author
R.L. Stine (b. 8 October 1943) was born Robert Lawrence Stine in Columbus, Ohio. He studied at Ohio State University and began his career writing humor books and joke collections for children.
Life and Career
Stine created the Fear Street series in 1989 — horror novels aimed at teenagers, set in the fictional town of Shadyside — which became a major bestseller. Goosebumps, launched in 1992 with Welcome to Dead House, was aimed at a younger audience (ages 8–12) and became a cultural phenomenon: the series produced over 60 original books, spawned television shows, films, and spin-off series, and at its peak was selling over 4 million copies per month.
Each Goosebumps book features a self-contained horror story — cursed masks, living dummies, monster blood, haunted cameras — typically ending with a twist. The formula was enormously effective at turning reluctant readers into book consumers.
Major Works and Themes
Stine writes about childhood fears — the dark, the unknown, the uncanny — in accessible, fast-paced prose. He is the most commercially successful children’s horror writer in history.
