A short life of the author

Ocean Vuong was born on 14 October 1988 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. His family fled Vietnam when he was two, spending time in a Philippine refugee camp before settling in Hartford, Connecticut. He was raised by his mother and grandmother, neither of whom could read — he learned English as a child through books and television, and was the first literate person in his immediate family. He studied at Pace University and earned his MFA at New York University.

Life and Career

Night Sky with Exit Wounds (2016), his debut poetry collection, was an astonishing arrival. The poems moved between Vietnam War violence, refugee displacement, queer desire, and the tenderness of familial love with a musical intensity that drew comparisons to Frank O’Hara, Federico García Lorca, and Li-Young Lee. The collection won the T.S. Eliot Prize — Vuong, at twenty-eight, was the youngest poet ever to receive it — and the Whiting Award. It announced a major talent.

On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous (2019), his first novel, was written as a letter from Little Dog, a Vietnamese American man, to his illiterate mother. The novel moved between Hartford, Connecticut, and rural Vietnam, between addiction and tenderness, between the body’s vulnerability and its capacity for beauty. It explored intergenerational trauma, the legacy of the Vietnam War, the opioid crisis in American small towns, and the discovery of queer sexuality with prose of extraordinary lyrical density. The book was a bestseller, translated into over thirty languages.

Time Is a Mother (2022), his second poetry collection, was written in the aftermath of his mother’s death from breast cancer. The poems were more experimental than his debut — incorporating found text, white space, and fragments — and more directly confrontational about grief, survival, and the obligation to keep making art.

Vuong has taught at the University of Massachusetts Amherst as an associate professor in the MFA programme since 2019.

Vuong’s central subjects are displacement, the body, and the violence that history inflicts on both.
