A short life of the author
Kate DiCamillo (b. 25 March 1964) was born in Philadelphia and raised in Clermont, Florida. She worked in a book warehouse at the University of Minnesota before publishing her first novel.
Life and Career
Because of Winn-Dixie (2000) — about a girl who adopts a stray dog and builds a community in a small Florida town — was a Newbery Honor book and her debut. The Tiger Rising (2001) is a quieter, darker novel about grief.
The Tale of Despereaux (2003) — about a mouse who loves music and a princess — won the Newbery Medal. Flora & Ulysses (2013) — about a girl and a superpowered squirrel — won her second Newbery. The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane (2006) — about a china rabbit who learns to love — may be her finest work.
Major Works and Themes
DiCamillo writes about loneliness, hope, community, and the transformative power of love and storytelling. Her prose is luminous and spare.
