Freckleface Strawberry (2007, Bloomsbury, illustrated by LeUyen Pham) is based on Moore’s own experience as a red-haired, freckle-faced child who desperately wanted to fit in. The book became a bestseller and spawned sequels (Freckleface Strawberry and the Dodgeball Bully, Freckleface Strawberry: Best Friends Forever) and an off-Broadway musical adaptation.
My Mom Is a Foreigner, But Not to Me (2009, illustrated by Meilo So) draws on Moore’s experience as the daughter of a Scottish-born mother, celebrating children with foreign-born parents.
