1. Biography

A short life of the author

Jordan Harper (b. 1979) was born in a small town in the Missouri Ozarks and grew up in the rural Midwest. He worked as a newspaper reporter before moving to Los Angeles, where he became a television writer for Gotham, The Mentalist, Hightown, and other series.

Life and Career

Love and Other Wounds (2015) — stories about the criminal margins of Los Angeles: hitmen, drug dealers, ex-cons — announced his voice. She Rides Shotgun (2017) — about Nate McClusky, released from prison to find that the Aryan Steel gang he betrayed has put a green light on his ex-wife and eleven-year-old daughter Polly — won the Edgar Award for Best First Novel. The novel’s power lies in the relationship between the hard, violent father and the resourceful, terrified daughter who must learn to survive in his world.

Everybody Knows (2023) — about a fixer and a publicist in Los Angeles who cover up the crimes of the rich until a murder forces them to choose between survival and conscience — was his most ambitious novel, a portrait of LA as a city where power operates through silence and complicity.

Major Works and Themes

Harper writes about the intersection of crime and class in the American West — the ways poverty, incarceration, and violence shape communities. His prose is lean and cinematic, his plotting relentless, and his sympathy for damaged characters genuine.
