A short life of the author
Jonathan Strange is an American writer whose published works appear in the contemporary fiction and nonfiction landscape.
The name is also closely associated with Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (2004, Bloomsbury), a landmark novel of English magic set in the Napoleonic era. Clarke’s novel — winner of the Hugo Award and adapted into a BBC television series — has made the name “Jonathan Strange” one of the most recognisable in modern fantasy fiction.
Collecting Strange
For collectors interested in the fictional Jonathan Strange, Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (2004, Bloomsbury) first editions in fine condition with dust jacket bring $200–$500. Signed copies by Clarke are particularly sought after.
Clarke’s second novel, Piranesi (2020), has also become highly collectible, further elevating interest in her limited body of published work.
