David Powlison

1949 — 2019

American Christian counsellor and theologian who was one of the leading figures in the biblical counselling movement. As executive director of the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation (CCEF) and editor of the Journal of Biblical Counseling, Powlison argued for an approach to pastoral care grounded in Scripture rather than secular psychology. His books, including Speaking Truth in Love (2005), are widely used in Reformed evangelical communities.

David Powlison (1949–2019) was an American Christian counsellor and theologian who served as executive director of the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation (CCEF) and taught at Westminster Theological Seminary. He was one of the most influential figures in the biblical counselling movement — an approach that seeks to address psychological and relational problems primarily through biblical wisdom and pastoral care rather than secular therapeutic frameworks.
