A short life of the author
David Goggins (b. 1975) was born on 17 February 1975 in Buffalo, New York. He grew up in an abusive household, was overweight as a young man, and worked as a pest exterminator before enlisting in the Air Force and then joining the Navy SEALs, becoming one of the few people to complete BUD/S, Army Ranger School, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller training. He has run over sixty ultramarathons and once held the Guinness World Record for the most pull-ups in twenty-four hours (4,030).
Life and Career
Can’t Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds (2018) — a memoir structured around “challenges” that readers are invited to complete, about Goggins’s journey from an abused child to a 300-pound man to a Navy SEAL and ultraendurance athlete — was initially self-published and sold over 5 million copies through word-of-mouth, podcast appearances (particularly Joe Rogan), and social media. The book’s philosophy centres on the “40% Rule” — the idea that when you think you’re done, you’re only at 40% of your capacity — and “callusing the mind” through voluntary suffering.
Never Finished: Unshackle Your Mind and Win the War Within (2022) continued his story and philosophy.
