A short life of the author
Michael Bruce Sterling (b. 1954) was born on 14 April 1954 in Brownsville, Texas. He studied journalism at the University of Texas at Austin. He has lived in Austin, Belgrade, and Turin, Italy. He is married to the Serbian writer Jasmina Tešanović.
Life and Career
Sterling’s early fiction — the Shaper/Mechanist stories, collected in Schismatrix Plus — depicted a future solar system in which humanity has split into two posthuman factions: the Shapers (who use genetic engineering) and the Mechanists (who use prosthetics and computing). This setting — dense, idea-rich, and deeply strange — established his reputation.
As the editor and polemicist of the cyberpunk movement, Sterling compiled Mirrorshades: The Cyberpunk Anthology (1986) and wrote the movement’s defining manifesto in its preface. His role was less as a stylist (that was Gibson) and more as a theorist and organiser — the movement’s ideologue.
Islands in the Net (1988) — about a post-nation-state world of data havens and corporate warfare — won the John W. Campbell Memorial Award. The Difference Engine (1990, co-written with William Gibson) — an alternate history in which Babbage’s computer works and the Information Age arrives in Victorian England — was the definitive steampunk novel.
Heavy Weather (1994), Holy Fire (1996), Distraction (1998), and Zeitgeist (2000) continued his exploration of near-future societies under technological and environmental stress.
Sterling’s nonfiction — The Hacker Crackdown (1992), his Viridian Design Movement manifesto, his blog, and his talks — have been as influential as his fiction.
