A short life of the author
Bertrand de Margerie (1922–1991) was a French Jesuit priest, theologian, and historian of biblical exegesis whose multi-volume Introduction à l’histoire de l’exégèse (Introduction to the History of Exegesis) is a landmark of patristic scholarship.
The work surveys the history of biblical interpretation from the early Church Fathers — Origen, Jerome, Augustine, the Cappadocians — through medieval and early modern commentators. De Margerie’s approach combined philological rigor with a deep commitment to Catholic theology, situating the study of Scripture within the living tradition of the Church.
His work has been translated into English and remains an important reference for scholars of patristics, biblical hermeneutics, and the history of Christian thought.
